The Bread Project

2021

The Bread Project was a response to the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2021 and to the isolation and ensuing loneliness that hung over us all.  In March of that year, I baked two loaves of sourdough bread and gave them to two neighbours, fresh from the oven. They each nominated a household and the next day I walked their loaves to them. So over the course of the year a chain was built and a network of friendship resurfaced, each recipient telephoning ahead and behind of the loaf of bread that arrived with me. This simple gift became a symbol of hope and of kindness and as I followed the strands and structures of this community, the strength of its connectivity resurfaced and its culture woke again.

The Bread Project began in Hambledon, in the south of England, and found a simultaneous life in East London.
