One hundred cups, one hundred different combinations of clay and woodash glaze, one hundred beginnings, You hold this to your lips and think of me… is one of two acts of creation, epics in the domestic, created for exhibition at the Royal College of Art as part of my research, I hope it works/Material Dances.
Through an exploration of uniqueness of form and colour through these individual, ordinary objects, created at scale, the work explores the infintite possibility of narrative that begin with a relationship with me, a maker. The impression of my hand leaves space for yours, you touch it to your lips and it becomes a part of your life. We use it until it becomes such a familiar part of our existence that we almost forget it, filling it with a history of quotidian use, until we drop it and remember in the moment it breaks how much it meant to us.
How do we value these objects that are at once, ordinary and intimate?
